Tanzio da Varallo

c. 1575-1633

Antonio d'Errico (Enrico), called Tanzio da Varallo. Piedmontese School. Born c. 1575; died c. 1635. He is said to have been a pupil of his brother, a painter. In Rome, possibly as early as 1610 and as late as 1616, he was impressed by the work of Caravaggio, whose influence he felt not only at this time, but also to some extent always after his retum home. Here his style was turned in the direction of Lombard Mannerism, emphasized, no doubt, by the art of North European Mannerists.
